Getting About
Car Hire
Car hire is available from a large number of outlets and is quite reasonably
priced depending on type of vehicle and period of hire. Our own preferred
choice is Acmenya Car Hire
(e-mail acmenya@ebim.net for availability
and prices).
Cars can be collected at the airport or delivered to the villa, subject
to prior arrangement.
Dolmus (mini buses)
The cheapest and most frequent mode of transport on the island. Just flag
down these mini-busses as they come along the road and hop aboard. Approximately
40p for the journey between Lapta and Girne they provide excellent value
for money. Dolmus stop running by late evening but you can always get
a lift out to your intended destination and arrange a taxi back.
Taxis
There are a number of local taxi firms and lifts can be pre-booked in
advance for a night out. Additionally, most bars and restaurants will
call one for you. Many local restaurants will even come and collect you
at the bungalow and return you safely home afterwards for no charge other
than the price of your meal.
Getting Out
Restaurants
A large selection of restaurants exist, ranging from the humble Çorbaci
(Soup House) where truly ethnic cuisine is served, to fashionable French,
Chinese and Indian Cuisine Restaurants. Prices vary accordingly. There
are also a number of excellent Cypriot Cuisine Restaurants which offer
very good value for money. Please refer to our
Restaurant
Guide for our recommendations on local places to eat.
Bars
There are many establishments around the harbour in Girne (approx 12km
from the villa) that serve a variety of drinks and cocktails. In the North,
most bars can be found within the larger hotels, which are all open to
non-residents. Additionally, all of the restaurants listed in our Restaurant
Guide are happy to serve drinks to non-dining customers.
Care must be taken when visiting nightclubs in the area. Most are attached
to casinos within the larger hotels and many are a front for more adult
recreation, available at an hourly rate..!!!
Casinos
Many of the larger hotels are built around casinos. High rollers from
the Turkish mainland come to gamble on the island and fortunes can be
won or lost at the turn of a card. Entrance is usually free and as long
as you are playing the 'slots' or tables drinks are usually provided free
of charge. Also, most offer an extensive buffet throughout the night for
no charge. Perhaps you can try your hand at winning the cost of your holiday!
